Can FortisBC customers get BC Hydro solar rebates?
No. BC Hydro solar and battery rebates are limited to BC Hydro and New Westminster Electric Utility (NWEU) customers. FortisBC operates a separate net metering program with different rules and rebate structures. If your bill says FortisBC, these rebates do not apply.
How much is the BC solar rebate in 2026?
Residential BC Hydro customers can receive up to $5,000 for solar ($1,000/kW installed, capped at 50% of eligible costs). Battery rebates depend on your setup: up to $1,500 with solar (no Peak Saver), or up to $5,000 with Peak Saver enrollment. Combined maximum with Peak Saver battery: $10,000.
Can I get a rebate for battery only?
Only in limited cases. As of April 1, 2026, standalone battery-only systems not enrolled in Peak Saver are not eligible. You may still qualify if you enroll in Peak Saver, or if you are adding a battery to an existing solar system that already has BC Hydro self-generation approval.
Why do I need an HPCN-certified installer?
BC Hydro requires solar and battery installations completed on or after June 1, 2026 to be performed by a Home Performance Contractor Network (HPCN) member. Hiring a non-HPCN contractor or self-installing makes the project ineligible for rebates. Verify your installer on BC Hydro's HPCN contractor finder before signing.
Do I need pre-approval before buying solar panels?
Yes. You must submit a self-generation application through MyHydro and receive technical pre-approval before purchasing equipment. Buying panels or batteries before approval is a common reason applications fail.
Can condo owners get the residential solar rebate?
Individually metered condo units are not eligible for residential per-unit rebates. If your building has a common area BC Hydro account or single-meter multi-family setup, the strata council or property manager may qualify under the multi-family program — not the standard homeowner rebate.
What changes on July 1, 2026 for net metering?
Rate Schedule 1289 closes to new solar customers. New connections move to Rate Schedule 2289 with fixed 10¢/kWh export compensation. Accepting a BC Hydro solar rebate confirms acceptance of RS 2289. Existing RS 1289 customers are grandfathered under BC Hydro published terms.
Are Tesla Powerwall or Tesla solar panels eligible?
No. BC Hydro states Tesla products are not eligible for solar and battery rebates. Check BC Hydro's product FAQ for eligible equipment before you buy.
What is Peak Saver and how does it affect my battery rebate?
Peak Saver is BC Hydro's battery program. Enrolling within 14 days of your battery in-service date unlocks the up to $5,000 battery rebate path. Without Peak Saver, a battery paired with solar qualifies for up to $1,500 — not $5,000.
How long does it take to receive the rebate after installation?
BC Hydro typically processes rebates within 30–45 business days after your system is connected to the grid, assuming your application and documentation are complete.
